Posted November 18, 2018 10:16:52Hand papermaking is a craft that is so popular and yet so difficult to master.
There are so many different ways to make a sheet of paper and the paper is so varied.
There is a lot of variability and the process is not always the same, according to Cammies papermaking department.
“It’s all about the hand,” says the owner, John Fazio.
“When you go to a shop and you buy a sheet you don’t know what you’re going to do with it.
That’s why we put out a hand papermaker kit that goes over a sheet and teaches you what to do.
It’s a great resource for new cama papermakers.”
The kit includes a hand template, paper towels, and a folding chair, which Fazi will make and send out to the papermakers at his shop.
“You need to be prepared and you need to have the tools.
It takes a lot to make paper,” he says.”
I’ve been making paper for 30 years.
I can’t say I’ve ever made anything that I was really excited about.
I just got to be the guy who could make it and get it out there.”
Fazio started making paper in 1985 when he was in his late 20s.
“I was doing a lot with my hands,” he said.
“If I didn’t have my papermaker, I was working on computers.
I worked at the local newspaper and at the school.
I had no interest in making paper.
I wanted to be a papermaker and I thought it was just a hobby, but I was hooked.”
In 1986, Fazia started working at the Cammys newspaper business, where he was known as the “hand man”.
“I used to come in, pick up a lot and I would work,” he recalls.
“They made me take a nap and I’d do the job for three or four hours, and then I’d go back to my cubicle and do the next job.”
It wasn’t until the late 1980s that Fazie began to take a more hands-on approach to papermaking.
“As I got older I was trying to get away from the computer and I started doing a little more hand work,” Fazian says.
“The problem is I couldn’t work on paper as much.
I would have to be more patient.
So, I would take a few sheets and then the next day I would do the same thing.”
By 1990, he was making about 80% of his daily work in the paper shop.
Then he was asked to make more.
“It took me a while to get my hands up to the quality level that I wanted,” he admits.
“But I got better and better.”
The next step was to create the Cama Papermaker Handbook, a manual of techniques, tips and tricks that will help Camas paper makers excel.
“You need all the tools,” Fazi says.
The Cama papermaker Handbook was published in 2017.
“The book teaches you how to make the most out of your paper,” Fuzio adds.
“To make your paper as good as possible, you need a lot more paper than you think.”
The hand paper making kit includes three templates, a folding machine and a paper towel.
Camas paper maker Fazino has made hand paper since 1986.
(Submitted by John Fazzio)Hand paper makes a sheet, so Fazios papermaker has been making hand paper for the past 30 years, and he uses a folding bench to make and receive his paper.
“There’s a lot that you have to learn and learn the right way,” Fizi says.
Fazioni says that he works at his cubicle a lot because it’s easier to get a job done in a cubicle, but he says he’s also got a lot in common with the customers he’s worked with.
“If you’re looking for a paper maker, I think it’s a good idea to look at a papermaking shop,” Fiazio says.
Fazi says the process for making a paper is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
“There are a lot variables,” he adds.
You have to go out there and work with the people who are in the shop.
You might have to take one step back and make another step forward.
“Sometimes you have a lot going on and sometimes you have nothing going on,” Faze says.
The kit also includes a folding tool that Faze has been using for about 30 years and one that has become quite popular for Camas.
“We have a folding table for people who want to make some paper,” she says.
One of the most common questions that Camas customers are asked is “How do I
